Dasara Trees - Shami

Shami (Prosopis spicigera)

Family : Fabaceae
Common Name : Jand

Shami is a rare medicinal tree and can grow in very harsh climatic conditions and in poor soil. The roots of the Shami can go down as deep as 35 metres in search of water. Being a legume, it adds nitrogen to the soil and increases its fertility.

Many communities in central India worship the Shami during Dasara. They soak the leaves of the Shami in water and on the day before Deepavali, bathe with this water.

Shami - Medicinal Use:

Shami is helpful to pregnant women and can prevent miscarriage.
Shami is used to treat a variety of other ailments such as asthma, bronchitis, dysentery, leucoderma, leprosy, muscle tremors and piles.

In Rajasthan, during times of famine, people eat the bark of the tree.

Shami - Identification:

Shami has short prickles and very small leaves and leaflets.

Worship of the shami tree (Shamipujan): The shami tree is worshipped with the recitation of special prayers, asking for victory over one’s defects and enemies, success in one’s endeavors and reunion with friends. Then rice, a betel nut (nuts from the betel tree found in India) and a gold coin (copper coin as a variant) are placed near the roots of that tree. After circumambulating the tree, some mud from its base and some of its leaves are brought home.

According to legend, Pandav went to dwell in the forest. On the way he hid his weapons in the hole of a "shami" tree. After one year he returned from the forest and on Dussehra day he took again his weapons and worshipped the shami tree and the weapons. Hence the custom of worshipping weapons on this feast.
